So after I cut my long hair short, I was loving the new style but really missing the purple colour I had previously. Having had bleached colour in my hair for so long, going back to my natural colour just felt really flat and myeh- particularly since I've FINALLY got a non-corporate finance job where I could rock rainbow hair if I really wanted!
So what did I do? Decided to brave the bleach and do it myself, that's what! I've harped on about colouring my own hair purple in blog posts before, but never caught it on camera.

VIDEO: How I Dyed My Dark Hair Purple Using Live Color XXL.
It's been a good few months since I took the plunge and bleached my hair purple. Anyone who's ever coloured their hair will completely understand the need to preserve that exact vibrancy from Day 1.
You'll start wondering how long you can go without washing your hair and whether you'll ever be able to use a white towel ever again. Well fear not - you can still live a normal hair life and maintain your colour! Read on, for my purple hair life lessons....

Maintaining Purple Hair with Scott Cornwall, Plastic Gloves & Cold Water
Some of you may have gathered that I'm partial to a bit of DIY when it comes to my hair. Not only is it cheaper, but there's something satisfying about doing your hair yourself and then seeing the results!
Basically, I realised that I kept coming back from the hairdresser, only half-pleased with my hair. (Oh yeah, and I also hate the hairdresser- here's why.)
I figured that instead of shelling out the big bucks each time, I would become a have-a-go hairdresser ....and then pay a real hairdresser to fix my experiment after (hopefully not necessary!)
And the gamble paid off!! I've been doing my own hair cuts and hair colours for the last few years - with the exception of a birthday trip to Bleach London. And it's that trip to Bleach which has sort of inspired today's hair adventure.
Because I'm entering the big leagues and GETTING OUT THE BLEACH!! SPOILER: I'm not going blonde btw. Soz.

Home Hair Dye Adventure: It's BLEACHING Time.
Okay, overly-dramatic title probs but I HAVE been cutting my own hair for basically the last 5 years.
Why? Partly the fact that I find snipping my ends quite soothing (it's an excellent procrastination activity if you're revising!), partly because I'm never 100% happy after a haircut and always end up trying to adjust it myself, but MAINLY because I'm ridiculous and neurotic and just find the whole experience so awkward!
Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm reduced to a hyperventilating rocking-in-the-corner mess every time I step into a salon - but I was talking to my pals about funny salon stories and today I'm writing a little silly compilation of my favourite hairdresser awks.
Some of them are probably Zoe Dubs specials (ie unique to mentalists like me) but some of them I know YOU KNOW. Now let's proceed and confirm just how mental I am shall we?

Why I'm Scared Of The Hairdresser. A Bit.
I've always envied those of you with light hair. Having dark hair means that introducing vibrant colour can be tricky - let alone expensive and damaging.
The last time I had bright pink and purple streaks, I had to bleach my hair to unrecognisable colours before dying it again (via a little trip to Bleach London!). My hair was brittle and hard for ages, it took weeeeks of moisturising masks and oils to reverse the damage - the downsides of harsh colouring.
But what if I told you there was a way to get bright colour... without the bleach? Without the damage, without the permanence of it all. Commitment-free colour - is there such a thing?!
Today, I trial the vibrant effects of a range of hair chalks by #Flashmob Cosmetics and I'll tell you now - they are SO MUCH FUN.
Hair chalks have been having a little moment in the fashion and beauty world - this easy method of adding vibrant short term colour has been all over the catwalks and in every bloggers beauty bag!!

Who Says Dark Hair Is Hard To Colour? #Flashmob Hair Chalks Review
Here's the story. To honour my new, slightly-less-corporate-but-still-quite-corporate job, I decided to inject a bit of colour into my hair. I couldn't go too far though - I will be working in Fashion (swoon) but I'm still a Finance bod and bright red hair (a la Rihanna in the What's My Name video) is only going to be a teeeeny bit SERIOUSLY frowned on.
But last year, when I went to China, I got some super-awesome-love-them bright red ombre layers (see my China & Hong Kong Cosmetics post) and I absolutely adored them. I got to inject a bit of personality into my black hair, whilst still keeping the party under wraps in the office.
Unfortunately, bright red hair fades fast and it wasn't long before my Rihanna Red layers were heading towards Hayley from Paramore - aka orange.
So, as a birthday treat, I decided to treat myself (aka let me Mr FV treat me)
to a salon dye-job to reinstate my coloured layers. I also wanted to try something different - Katy Perry purple rather than Rihanna red - and I went to the home of cray-cray coloured hair, Bleach in Dalston.
If you don't know Bleach London, get to know. Specialising in colour, their Instagram feed is a haven of pastels, flouro and beautiful, beautiful hair colour.
Hope you think my new hair colour is equally beautiful! Check it out.
