My wedding Pinterest collage!

Since I’m sure that most of my blog followers are basically just my friends and my mum, you’ll probably know that I got engaged at the end of 2016. Yep, he put a ring on it, I took a hand selfie, uploaded a facebook post – all of the usual eye-roll-inducing social norms. (see Instagram evidence here)

Since the initial engagement broadcast, wedding planning has been quietly underway but despite the lack of social media information I’ve had lots of questions from new brides-to-be seeking help. Therefore, I thought it was about time I put it all to paper...digitally. You know what I mean.

What are the wedding planning lessons learnt so far? More importantly what are the wedding fails to avoid and what are the wedding deals to be done? Of course, a business minded bride-to-be like me is being financially savvy about it all.

I won’t go into to the detailed timeline of ‘how to plan a wedding’ because it depends on how long your engagement is and frankly, there are better wedding websites out there which explain the planning process a lot better than I can.

What I WILL share today, is basically all the best wedmin stuff that I wish I had known in advance. The stuff that could have saved me money during wedding planning and, more importantly, the stuff that could have saved me a whooole lot of stress. Whilst I don’t have any wedding pictures yet, here’s some clips from my personal Wedding pinterest board to accompany…

A post shared by Zoe W (@zoe_dubs) on

Lesson 1: It’s okay to NOT be obsessed with your wedding.

When I first got engaged, I was absolutely convinced I was going to be the worlds best Bridezilla (in the worst way). If needed, I can worry about the tiniest, most irrelevant details and be a real force of nature when it comes to demands, so I’m sure they all got their Bridezoella badges ready.

When it came down to it, planning actually didn’t take over my life. Whilst I’m happy to discuss the pro’s and con’s of a buttercream vs royal icing wedding cake any day of the week, I really didn’t want to be ‘that’ person that constantly talks about their wedding. (You’ve all got that one in your life!)

Plus, if you’ve got more than 6 months to go, the question ‘how’s wedding planning going?’ actually becomes quite meaningless after a while.

Once you’ve actually got the majority of it sorted, there’s almost nothing to do until closer the time so you end up in a bit of a Wedding limbo stage. I’m frankly quite bored about talking about it but it’s not because I don’t care or aren’t excited by it. Remind yourself that you don’t need to be obsessed – for both you and your friends’ own sanity!

Pinterest Wedding Cake

You have plenty of time.

Whilst it’s exciting to get stuck in right away, there is no rush to get everything done as soon as possible. (unless you’re getting married really soon)

Myself and most of my engaged friends had at least a year until the wedding, so the most important thing is to get a venue and a date. Everything else can be done a lot later if you really need to. (And it’s surprising how much can be done last minute!)

With 4 months to go, I’ve only just got round to doing my formal invites and I’m glad I waited because I ended up finding an amazing deal compared to the ones I initially thought about.

I can genuinely say that wedding planning hasn’t been stressful because we’ve given it time and just taken on one task at a time. Venue, save the dates, florist, dress, photographer, entertainment and invites were all done slowly over 12 months with very little stress. (except the Guestlist – aka the Stresstlist)

Pinterest Greenery Vibe

Don’t feel pressured to rush into a decision.

One slightly linked to having lots of time, remember, there are hundreds of suppliers out there. Wedding florists, photographers, wedding chair cover decorations - I was always panicking that a good supplier I had found would instantly sell out and I had to land them quickly.

Unless you’re booking specialist or super popular suppliers, don’t get fooled by certain phrases that urge you to book quickly. Once you’ve registered an enquiry for a particular date, most reputable suppliers will let you know if someone else has enquired for the same day later on and at least give you first advantage to confirm then.

I also regretted making early moves on some things because I found better or cheaper suppliers later on. Most ‘special one off deals’ that were available tended to come back around later in the year.

Pinterest Seating Plan

Spend on what matters to you.

Money and budget is pretty much the crux of the decision making. They key thing I realised is to focus your wedding budget on what’s important to you.

When I really thought about it, I didn’t care that much about the ‘stuff I’m supposed to do’. Fancy invitations, wedding stationary and save the dates were less important to us. I ended up using Photoshop to create a fancy Save The Date image, which we then whatsapp-ed to our friends and family.

We then also got a free wedding website to put all the information that would normally go in the paper invite and all RSVPs were done electronically – saving us postage, printing and paper costs!

What is more important to our wedding? Booze! (quelle surprise, if you’ve seen my Instagram Stories) I sacrificed flower walls and floral arches, in favour of free flowing vino later on. Who wants to come NOW eh?

Where else am I saving money?

As a resident beauty expert and makeup addict, I will of course be doing it all myself. (Remember when I became a wedding makeup artist thanks to my makeup obsession?)

I'll be getting my hair coloured back to something a bit more normal, and a bit less purple but other than that, there are some great bridal beauty tips that can be sorted yourself. HUUUUUGE POST on bridal beauty coming soon.

I also managed to save money on the invites by getting them made in China, the bridesmaids dresses were bought during the sales for less than £20 and even my own dress was well under budget!

I actually saved a lot of money on my wedding dress so I’m keen to do a full dress shopping guide too (insert girly squeals here) but will keep that under wraps until after the wedding, so that I can show you the photos too!

ALL I can say is that they are just as ridiculously extra as I thought they might be. (Yep, there’s more than one thanks to some amazing discoveries which I can’t wait to share with you next time....)

Pinterest twinkly greenery

Look out for suppliers that can cover multiple services.

For example, I’ve seen some wedding photographers that also offer a free photo booth for any wedding they’re covering – saving you a couple hundred pounds.

I also picked Prezola to be host our gift list because their premium accounts are completely customisable, don't charge you extra fees for cash gifts AND also give you a free wedding website which integrates your online gift list.

When it came to gifts, we were deliberating whether we really needed a gift list - I mean, I’m not one to turn down presents but we already live together, and we already have a set of Tesco plates and cutlery that do the job. Did we really want to ask for a rose gold plated avocado spoon?!

On the other hand, we didn’t want to ask directly for money either. (insert sentence here about how we obviously don’t want gifts, we just want you to share this day with us)

I’m perfectly comfortable dealing with money as part of my day job and I’m certainly comfortable with a varying level of self awareness on a Friday night but turns out my inner British sense of what’s proper does draw a line at denominations of £25 and £50.

Fortunately, it turns out that Prezola also give you the option of creating a completely customised wedding gift list (without charging more for cash). What we’ve done is make our gift list into a personalised honeymoon shop, aka a polite way of shaking you down for money.

It’s got itemised elements of our honeymoon such as ‘a night in this hotel’, ‘a dinner at that restaurant’ or a ‘hiking tour across this historic site’. Just kidding, there’s obviously no hiking or any form of activity planned, other than eating, sleeping and snoozing. Mixed up in various locations, like in a spa, by the pool, in a hammock or on a boat. (Should I start a honeymoon planning business as a sidehustle?!)

Only ask for opinions I you really need.

It’s great to be a diplomat and ask bridesmaids and mothers for opinions but DO THIS WITH CAUTION. Only ask for opinions if you really want to hear them and be prepared for an opinion that you don’t agree with.

Particularly stressful when it comes to bridesmaids dresses. Parents also have a certain view of how weddings should or shouldn’t be but my general rule is, if you don’t pay for it, you don’t get to decide. Alternatively, ask a completely objective third party observer with absolutely NO personal interest in the matter...

And finally, that nicely leads to the overall learning that keeps coming up from every single couple that’s done it. It’s up to the two of you. Whilst it’s important to be respectful of other people’s feelings and requests – the final decision is down to you. (or mainly the bride if you’re like me)

And that’s it for now! Bridezoella over and out.

Wedding Planning Without The Planner Or The Budget? The Tips You Need To Know

So. I was interviewed by SmartBuyGlasses for their London Style feature, alongside Josie from FashionMumblr, Zara from MouldyFruit and Anneli Bush. HOW ABOUT THAT.

First of all, I was completely in the dark as to why they've picked me - as a complete non-established, non-famous (not even Insta-famous) blogger.

Second of all, I wanted to stay true to myself and not take myself too seriously in the interview. Despite, the fact I think I sound like a real plodhead in the feature, I'm absolutely loving the end result. If anyone else wants to write about me, please feel very welcome! .. Anyone?!

I did say I didn't take myself too seriously..

There's been a huge shift in blogging towards 'picture perfect' girls who have immaculate dressing tables, never-ending designer wardrobes and breakfasts that would count as pieces of art. And as much as I'd love to channel that in real life, it's just not me at all. I eat Sausage & Egg McMuffins and wear Rudolph pyjamas! ðŸ˜…

Youtube videos and lifestyle blogging was born from girls next door, who could just as easily be your pal or your friend's friend. I promise to continue being that person for you - regardless of whether you like my terrible jokes, poor diet or messy bedroom pictures. Thanks for sticking with me guys.

And, in case you missed it, here's the sunglasses feature I did with SmartBuyGlasses earlier this year. I basically run around on Oxford Street and babble passionately about all my favourite things to wear and do in London. Wahey.

What do YOU think of my first ever feature? Do I sound like a proper dork? Tweet me your thoughts @FaceValueBlog or send me a comment on Facebook!

Despite this bright, London spring weather we've had recently, you may have noticed a bit of a white snow gracing my Instagram. Yep, I popped over to Switzerland for a weekend with my Zurich-based gal pals and it was GREAT. It was a much needed mini-holiday and it was started in some SERIOUS style at World Duty Free in Heathrow Terminal 5.

Due to the money-saving accountant side of me, stocking up on beauty essentials at Duty Free is a mandatory stop every time I go to the airport. Seriously, it's like going to the cinema and not having popcorn, it's just a must-do right?

Yardley is a brand that we all know, but tend to associate with grannies and talc but I recently attended the launch of the new Yardley London Hermina fragrance - and was very pleasantly surprised.

I can tell you now that all talc-related judgements have been cast aside. The new Yardley London perfumes are modern and elegant, and what better way to encapsulate that then with a Modern Calligraphy workshop?

When is the right time to cut your hair? I love changing my hairstyle and colour but a haircut just seems so permanent, and irreversible. Especially when you haven't cut your hair in years!! Yup, seriously, the last time I had my haircut professionally, Brad Pitt was still with Jennifer Aniston (dream couple still!).

I've spent the last few years just chopping and trimming my own ends - no wonder I ended up with very, very long hair!

Friday is finally here and so comes my second instalment of Face Value Food Blog! So with yesterday being #NationalBurgerDay, it seemed the obvious thing to go have a beer and a burger, right? Hell yeah!

Now I’m unashamedly a bit of a London burger aficionado. Whether it’s the humble 99p puffy, additive filled cheeseburger at McDonalds or the full steak burger special at Hawksmoor, I’ve had my fair share.

I've been promising this for long enough so here we go - the inaugral Face Value FOOD blog. It's common knowledge from my Instagram feed that I go out to eat, a LOT. Blame it on laziness, excess, or even just my poor cooking skills but my food budget is pretty much the biggest expense for me - after my makeup budget of course.

I've got a great list of restaurants coming up for you including Fera at Claridges, The Merchant's Tavern, Bob Bob Ricard and Homeburger but today? I'm starting with a recent eat at Paradise Garage. Paradise Garage is the next installment from husband and wife team Robin and Sarah Gill - who are behind The Manor and The Dairy in Clapham. (both excellent)

So – last weekend I was at New Look Wireless Festival (in case you missed my endless festival spam on Instagram and Twitter) and it was BRILLIANT.

I love a good festival but when the British weather is on your side, it feels like everything’s right with the world.  To add to my summer festival happiness, I was there scouting celeb fashion and goss for Yahoo! As you know, I’ve been working with Yahoo!Lifestyle for a while now, covering Fashion Week and the like but this weekend was all about Yahoo!Celebrity which meant access backstage, outside the dressing rooms oh – and in the VIP area! I cannot believe my luck, what a great gig!

You can see all the official pics and news on Yahoo! but here’s a quick rundown on exactly what happened! Forget the beautifully instagrammed pictures and high fashion shots - this is the REAL way to do Wireless Festival..

What Bloggers REALLY Do At Wireless Festival 2015

The blogging hiatus is almost over because, tomorrow... I MOVE INTO MY NEW FLAT! In case you missed it, the last few Money Mondays have been about buying a house in London and I've actually been living out of a suitcase for the last two weeks - I even stopped blogging temporarily!

What have I learnt through it all? Read on dear friend because today is the penultimate in the Buying A House series.... Today, I bring you some life lessons and my First Time Buyer tips and my First Time Buyer Fails too!

Money Monday: Buying A House, What Have I Learnt? Tips From a First Time Buyer

A bit of a dramatic blog title but given that my last post was over 2 weeks ago, I felt it was only fair that I explain why I've STOPPED BLOGGING!

Before you start imagining dramatic versions of Zoe vs cyber trolls vs mid life crisis vs falling out of love with makeup (never!!), I can assure you that it's all very temporary.

Long story short, the main reason is because I'm currently homeless, living with friends, with all my worldly possessions in a suitcase or in storage. THERE'S YOUR DRAMAAAAA!! BOOM.

It's all planned (sort of) as part of the extremely stressful experience that is buying a house (if you're a first time buyer or thinking about it - check out my handy How To Buy A House series as part of my Money Monday posts!!)

Anyway, as a result there's very little bloggage going on, but here's at least a small picture diary of what's been going on over the last 2 weeks....

1. I binned a serious shit-load of stuff.
I'm talking 15 bags of crap - mainly bills and beauty bits from 5 years ago, very old pants, a collection of used padded envelopes, patterned tights (what was I thinking?) and a freezer full of food I forgot about, froze, then never got round to eating again. (guilty!)

2. I packed up my beauty station
It took about 4 days but I finally managed to sort this product palace into boxes - the hardest part was narrowing it down to the the best items to take with me until I move into the new flat. And in just one bag! Serious work!!

I've also decided that my new beauty space is going to be minimal and immaculate like all those beautiful photos that other beauty bloggers post on their Instagrams.... Maybe. Most likely not.

3. And I found these....
Fashion has odd socks, Beauty has lids with no owners. That's like. *counts* SIXTEEN lids there. Some girls don't even have sixteen products to their name. I should start Beautaholics Anonymous..

4. I tried to sell my stuff online
Selling via Facebook was surprisingly effective and no ebay and paypal fees!! Definitely recommend trying this method before you go official!

Top tips for blog sales:
- Offer bundle prices if you want to get rid of stuff fast
- Double check postage before you commit to a price!
- Really think about what you would buy from someone - dont waste your time taking pictures of stuff which is unlikely to sell.

5. I ate a LOT of this.

Papa John's special garlic sauce is THE DREAM. It's like garlic butter, on steroids. I'm going to buy a supply for my new flat..

6. Storage is SO efficient

I've never put stuff in storage before but OMG, it's incredible how much you can fit into a small space. It's also mindblowing how many units are squeezed into the building - the accountant in me is loving the efficient use of floor space.
This is 40sqft, with plenty of room spare, and less than £30 a week - apparently some people actually illegally live in storage!! It IS much cheaper than rent.. hmmm.

7. I am the least helpful person ever in a house move.
For this reason, Mr FV was very clever and decided to hire a man and van to help. (Such a good idea - best money he's ever spent!) Here's me being....helpful.

8. Once I have a flat, I'm GETTING ONE OF THESE!

What is it?!!?! It's called an Axolotl aka the Mexican Walking Fish and it is the cutest, most bizarre looking alien thing- it lives in the water!

It just looks like it's smiling all the time - I really really want one!! Looks like it'll be easier to look after and my second choice after that is a house bunny so Mr FV is in favour of the fish.... Any ideas of other low maintenance pets??

So there we go - a fortnight of progress!

Hopefully I'll be back onto blogging soon with lots of pictures of my new minimalist, tidy beauty station and my new alien. I shall call him Miguel..

MONEY MONDAY: How To Buy A Flat & Other Stories

Man oh man, it's official. London is THE most expensive city in the world. It used to be Hong Kong (my second home from home) but with the British pound and property prices rising in value, the big smoke is now top of the list. Great.

The cost of renting in London is apparently double that of in the rest of the UK, but regardless of where you live - it's always good to reassess exactly how much you can afford to rent and if you can save money anywhere. Sounds boring, but it's true and is becoming more and more important as the squeeze sets in.

MONEY MONDAY: Save Money Whilst Renting

Here's the story. To honour my new, slightly-less-corporate-but-still-quite-corporate job, I decided to inject a bit of colour into my hair. I couldn't go too far though - I will be working in Fashion (swoon) but I'm still a Finance bod and bright red hair (a la Rihanna in the What's My Name video) is only going to be a teeeeny bit SERIOUSLY frowned on.

But last year, when I went to China, I got some super-awesome-love-them bright red ombre layers (see my China & Hong Kong Cosmetics post) and I absolutely adored them. I got to inject a bit of personality into my black hair, whilst still keeping the party under wraps in the office.

Unfortunately, bright red hair fades fast and it wasn't long before my Rihanna Red layers were heading towards Hayley from Paramore - aka orange.

So, as a birthday treat, I decided to treat myself (aka let me Mr FV treat me)
to a salon dye-job to reinstate my coloured layers. I also wanted to try something different - Katy Perry purple rather than Rihanna red - and I went to the home of cray-cray coloured hair, Bleach in Dalston.

If you don't know Bleach London, get to know. Specialising in colour, their Instagram feed is a haven of pastels, flouro and beautiful, beautiful hair colour.

Hope you think my new hair colour is equally beautiful! Check it out.

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you won’t have failed to spot my constant WEDDING FEED last weekend.

First of all - sorry for flooding your feed. Second of all - thanks for all those that sent me congrats but it wasn’t MY wedding (awkward). A friend of mine was getting married in The City of London.

Getting married in 'The City' is a lovely idea – I always assumed I’d want to get married in a country house or picturesque chapel somewhere but I actually really like the idea of getting married amongst the skyscrapers, historic landmarks and glass buildings which make up the heart of London.

Anyway, enough about my future-but-not-anytime-soon-wedding  (at least that’s what I’ll tell Mr FV so he doesn’t freeeak out on me) – let’s bring the focus back to the wedding I DID go to....

Normally I write a “What I Wore To Work Wednesday” post on Wednesdays (surprise) but I figured, hey, a wedding doesn’t come up that often.

So today, it’s a special edition of “What I Wore To The Wedding Wednesday”. What a treat you guys are in for!

F&F Shift Dress £35
Therapy Quilted Chain Bag £25
Cream Patent Heels from Hong Kong £7

I personally like to change up my outfits, I try not to wear the same dress again and again, so it doesn’t make sense for me to invest in a lovely dress which is over £100. Face Value frequent readers will have realised, I is allllllll about the quantity, not quality.

'What I Wore To The Wedding' Wednesday: Supermarket Style

Apologies for a bit of a lapse in blogging this week. I write a lot of my posts in the weekend to be scheduled throughout the week and as you can see there's been nowt since last weekend!

All with good reason of course and that reason is.. GIN.

Now I'm not normally a lifestyle type blog, but I really wanted to shout about the great time I had at The London Gin Club at The Star At Night in Soho.

It was Mr Face Value's birthday and I bought him a gift voucher for a gin tasting menu. Yes, a gin tasting menu. Thankfully not an 8 course monster gin feast - I wouldn't survive the night as I'm the biggest lightweight ever! Fact.

We sampled four different Gins with four different garnishes and the chance to compare them side by side was actually really interesting!

Here's a story - I used to hate gin. I thought it tasted of feet. Now that i'm a 'real' grown up, I have come to embrace my poison but I never really thought of gin having different flavours. Yes, I thought Hendricks was nicer than Gordons but I thought they were all quite similar. Right?

OH HOW I WAS WRONG.

How to 'do a gin tasting'

So basically, you get four gins with different garnishes and two bottles of Fevertree tonic - I remember we had King of Soho, NB Gin, Juniper Green and Williams Great British Gin.

I say 'I remember', I actually mean I took a photo of our menu because hella knows after four gins if I'll remember my name let alone the Gin name.

What next?

You taste the gin straight, then with tonic to see how the flavour changes, and then you add the garnish and taste again. And woweee - they really were so different! I was expecting to be like "yeahhh, that's kinda different... i can kindaa taste the...cucumber? Elderflower?"

For example. Juniper Green was what I imagined 'normal' floral gin to taste like but  Williams was fantastically spicy - almost like Christmas in a cup. I had NO idea gin could taste like that!

And then we took it one step further...

The GINVENTOR - that's right. We invented our own gin. How fun does this look?!

What's a ginventor..?

So you get two blank 'base' gins and a load of 'botanical distillates' like pink grapefruit, cardamon and coriander.

Now we knew what gin flavours we liked, we had a go at making our own!

Mr FV ended up with a glorious orange/clovey type gin and tonic and mine.... well.... I'm always a fan of more is more. But I can safely say that coriander, red berries and lime does NOT go. (although I was adamant at the time that my gin was friggin awesome)

So you can buy the Gin Tasting Menus and Ginventor as a gift voucher for your gin-fiend friends or loved ones. Or you can just rock up at The Star At Night and either order from their exteeeensive gin list - or choose a tasting menu to try.

Either way - I fully recommend it for a night out after dinner - or as a date venue - it's definitely something different to do!

You can find more at http://thelondonginclub.com

Now - to get on with the rest of today....  More blogging coming soon. Maybe.

Life Maths: Today = Gin > Blog

Hi team, so today I thought I'd bring you something slightly different to the normal product and waaa chat.

Last week I went to Zoo Lates, a series of evening events held at London Zoo- basically over-18s going to the zoo plus booze, grown up fancy dress and lots of pictures striking a "fierce" pose.

Never one to shy away from fancy dress, my friends and I decided to fully embrace the challenge by going as a plethora of Noah's Ark creatures. I love fancy dress but most of all, I love face painting!

I guess it's really an extension of makeup, maybe that's why I enjoy it so much?

So, as you may be able to tell from above picture - I decided to go as a deer, and after uploading it to my Instagram I got lots of requests on how to do it. So I thought - give the people what they want - here's a little tutorial of how I got the look...
