If you're a regular reader of Face Value Beauty Blog (anyone?!) then you will probably know that I DIY dye my naturally black hair to the current purple/blue/pink shade. There are actually a few purple hair dyes out there, but which one is best?
Today, in the name of beauty science, I've done a highly non-scientific test to try some of the top semi-permanent purple colours out there.

Purple Hair Experiment: Crazy Colour vs Schwarzkopf XXL vs La Riche Directions
It's been a good few months since I took the plunge and bleached my hair purple. Anyone who's ever coloured their hair will completely understand the need to preserve that exact vibrancy from Day 1.
You'll start wondering how long you can go without washing your hair and whether you'll ever be able to use a white towel ever again. Well fear not - you can still live a normal hair life and maintain your colour! Read on, for my purple hair life lessons....

Maintaining Purple Hair with Scott Cornwall, Plastic Gloves & Cold Water
Soooo.. in case you missed it, I dyed my hair purple! Desperate to inject some colour into my dark hair, I've been DIY colouring for years but never managed to get the vibrant colour I so desired. So I gritted my teeth and admitted it. I needed professional help.
Great location and very reasonable prices, given that it's a salon in Central London. But what about the results? Let me tell you what went down.
First up, I had a colour consultation with senior stylist Lucia, to tell her about what I wanted to have done. I say "tell", it was more like "show her the Pinterest collages" I had created. Does anyone else do that?!
Lucia basically then told me that every picture on there was basically a lie - Instagrammed and edited beyond recognition. Doh, dreams dashed. But could she do it? Yes, most likely. Dreams, BACK ON THE TABLE!
Lucia was careful to talk me through my options. Instead of traditional bleach, she planned to use Magma, a new type of bleach by Wella Professionals which lightens hair and deposits colour into the hair shaft at the same time. Therefore it doesn't take as long to bleach and colour hair, as well as giving a good base colour for your hair. Sounded like a plan to me!
Unfortunately, on the day of my appointment, the shade of Magma required was not available so I had to make do with traditional bleach instead. Oh well, it still did the same job, just took slightly longer.
The first step was to lighten my hair. I had the bleach applied to my hair, wrapped in foils and heated under a lamp until the ends were that perfect straw colour, without any orange brassy tone.
The bleach was washed out with a silver toning shampoo and inspected at great length. Where the colour wasn't right, Lucia took more time to apply more bleach - I appreciated this attention to detail! It was late and I was the last customer but Lucia soldiered on, to get it just right.
Next, a vivid blue purple colour was mixed and applied to my freshly bleached ends before being left to absorb and washed out one more time. Ta-da!
The Finished Look.
I absolutely LOVE the results - when directly in the light it is EVEN more vibrant than in this pic and when indoors, it's subtle enough for me to wear to the office. Super wearable for such a bright colour.
I particularly like the different tones and shades of purple which adds movement and makes my hair look much thicker than it is. Lucia has noticed a trend moving away from 'perfect block colour' to mixed tones through the hair with more clients trying ombre looks and different levels of colour.
I'd done my research and looked at their portfolio of looks on the ColourNation Twitter and Facebook page and was reassured that I had picked the right place. It's always good to look at the past work of hairdressers, particularly when bleach is involved!
Aftercare.
There's no pretending - as I mentioned in my Yahoo! Purple Hair post, this sort of colour requires maintenance! The price you pay for vibrant colour!
First of all, to help heal your hair from the bleach, some serious moisture is required. ColourNation stock a full range of Macadamia Oil which is great for fixing damaged hair and adding shine. (I've reviewed the Macadamia Oil Healing Treatment and Detangling Brush before and really liked it.)
To keep my colour fresh, I apply a mask of purple colour every other week. Schwarkopf XXL Ultra Brights and Chill Ed Stain are great for this. (I introduced these in my home hair dye post here.) The Chill Ed Stain is particularly moisturising but not quite as vibrant as the Ultra Brights.
Mix these semi-permanent colours in with a bit of conditioner and apply to damp hair before leaving for about 15 minutes - I definitely recommend clingfilming your hair up unless you want purple streaks everywhere!

Salon Review: ColourNation Purple Hair
Okay, overly-dramatic title probs but I HAVE been cutting my own hair for basically the last 5 years.
Why? Partly the fact that I find snipping my ends quite soothing (it's an excellent procrastination activity if you're revising!), partly because I'm never 100% happy after a haircut and always end up trying to adjust it myself, but MAINLY because I'm ridiculous and neurotic and just find the whole experience so awkward!
Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm reduced to a hyperventilating rocking-in-the-corner mess every time I step into a salon - but I was talking to my pals about funny salon stories and today I'm writing a little silly compilation of my favourite hairdresser awks.
Some of them are probably Zoe Dubs specials (ie unique to mentalists like me) but some of them I know YOU KNOW. Now let's proceed and confirm just how mental I am shall we?

Why I'm Scared Of The Hairdresser. A Bit.
Its finally the end of 2012 and what a year it’s been! This blog is officially 8 days old, with a Twitter account, a Facebook page and almost 800 page views! Thanks again to everyone who’s supported it thus far, hope you all have a very special new year.
Now, mushiness aside. TO BUSINESS.
2012: My favourite Beauty buys
For me, 2012 was the year of the eyebrow! This year, I upgraded my entire brow kit, buying an angled 266 brush from Mac, the Benefit Browzings kit (pictured right), and the ELF Treat&Tame Brow gel.
I’m still trying to get the shape right - I tend to alternate between “power brows”, heavy and angular, and my daily brow - an enhancement of my natural brow shape. The Browzings kit comes with two shades to work with, the darker wax helps hold the shape but I only used both powder and wax on a 'power brow' day. Powder alone is great for a natural look. It also comes with mini tweezers and brushes all in a mirrored compact so is perfect for on-the-go and travel times! Definitely a good companion for those of you who find yourself doing your face on the way to work!!
Once I get my Youtube channel sorted, I’ll do an Eyebrow special..
Moving onto the world of haircare, this year for me was all about the FOAM DIY JOB. Normally a home hair dye job is all about avoiding drips on the carpet, but the introduction of the foam has meant I no longer need to cover my carpet with plastic bags and newspaper. Hooray!
It has also meant that the colour distribution is much more even as the foam is much easier to spread with your fingers rather than trying to comb through a liquid dye.
I used to use Schwarzkopf Live XXL in a vibrant red shade - it works really well with stubborn dark hair that refuses to pick up colour. I used it for absolutely years and I really recommend it to anyone looking for a strong vibrant look.
However, since I started my proper grown-up day job, I’ve toned the red down and now use John Frieda Precision Foam Colour in Deep Cherry Brown in order to give a little bit of a burgundy kick without being too office-offensive. All you DIY hair-dyers out there- once you try foam, you will not go back!
Eyeliner gel finally appeared on the commercial market, meaning that I no longer had to fork out for Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner. My Boots favourite this year was the Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner - it glides on smoothly and is an intense sooty black which stays true to its colour, not like some brands which look dark but come out almost grey! It comes with the perfect brush (full sized!) and is currently on a buy one get one half price at Boots, holllaaaa. My tip is to keep the brush clean otherwise it hardens - easily prevented by swiping it on cotton wool soaked with makeup remover..
Another huge hit amongst my pals was hair oil, but I’m still deciding on my favourite. Argan? Morrocan? Jojoba? To be honest, I find hair oil quite tricky to apply evenly. I much prefer a spray-type product otherwise I end up with heavy greasy patches! Lanky hair, oooh.
There are some great repair-type products out there that use oils to some extent within their formulas but are easier to apply - such as Aussie Miracle Hair Insurance Leave-In Conditioner which I use as a nourishing spray before blow-drying.
Finally - my favourite. This year I discovered the wonder of eyelash fibres. Little pots of fibres that coat your lashtips and make them look supremely longer than they are!
After wearing false eyelashes every time I went out-out, I started doing my own individual eyelash extensions. This finicky process took their toll on boh my patience and my eyelashes, needless to say I only have extensions for special occasions like holidays now.
There's far too much to talk about in this one post, soI will be doing a whole blog post on this next year. For now, rest assured that you dont have to splash out £35 on the ModelCo lash fibres - obviously, I have found a cheaper and better subtitute....
Speaking of Value, my big discoveries this year have been Cashback websites , rewarding credit cards (post coming soon) and the joy of signing up to the Pizza Express newsletter who keep offering me great excuses to eat more glorious doughballs!
Final Course
No more blog talk now- my family are on their way to bring in the New Year and I have foolishly agreed to put on a 5 course FEAST. Apologies in advance to my family for my cooking. I think lots of alcohol wil be needed by all....
Have a truly Happy New Year! xXXXx
