I’ve noticed that as I grow up (read: age horribly), my skin issues and skincare routine have changed as well. Other than getting rid of blackheads, I never used to be that fussed about pore size, or the appearance of pores – there are quite a few products out there that can be used to minimise or hide the look of pores, so I never really gave it a second thought.

However, things change and the other week, I found myself looking at those awful nose pore strips that were so popular c.2006 – you know, the ones that look like giant plasters, except they shrink like concrete onto your nose and essentially feel like they’re ripping off the top layer of your skin. Could I really put myself through that again?

For Valentine's Day, I pulled together a collection of visually stunning beauty products over on Yahoo Lifestyle - I'm talking literal masterpieces in cosmetic form. But, like they say, less is sometimes more and my latest beauty bag inhabitant is a prime example of that.

Just when I thought I had tried every brand out there, something understated and elegant came through my letterbox from Cosmetics A La Carte.

So, I'm having an affair..... I've only just treated myself to a Burberry Lip Cover and now there's already a new lipstick love in my life. Another one?! Already?!

Lipsticks are the best transformational tool when it comes to changing up your look up (this is the main justification I give myself everytime I buy ANOTHER one) and these days, it's not just about the colour. It's also about TEXTURE.

For example, a shiny red lipstick on me screams glamour, sex and confidence but a matte red lipstick says sophistication, poise and charm... (Not buying it? Nah, Mr FV didn't either. I got a big eyebrow raising thrown in my direction.)

Either way - I consider myself to be supremely weak when it comes to buying more beauty, sooo unsurprisingly I ended up treating myself to this Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipgloss/lipstick/amazingness.... HIYA NEW BEAUTY FRIEND!

So, I've never had a great history with matte finishes. Given that my lips are crispy preeetty much all year round, matte finishes tend to highlight dry patches and look a bit flaky on my lips.

So imagine my excitement when I tried the Bourjois Velvet lip cream and it didn't highlight any dry bits at all! In fact, it looked really smooth!

New Lipstick Love: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet

It's happened. I've been shopping!! Ever since the new Revlon Matte Balms came out, I've been absolutely bursting to buy one but they've been selling out EVERYWHERE (and this comes from a girl who has FOUR Boots stores within walking distance of her house.)

This little shopping obsession started when I was testing the Matte Balms out of curiosity whilst waiting for a train. I didn't really plan to buy one, I'm on a "do I NEEED it" hype at the moment, but I did not expect to find a colour I really really really liked (and needed).

It had been a long day, I thought I'd treat myself so I put the tester down, reached for the new one and .... sods law, they had NONE!

Coming so close to the purchase before being turned away is possibly the worst thing EVER (after war, famine, domestic violence etc obvs) but four trips to the four Boots near me later and I'm now smiling like the cat who's got the cream.

Yup, I found it!  (Look at my happy face)

What is all this fuss about? Only the new Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Mischievous.... in short, it's a velvety-matte finish version of the Clinique Chubby Stick. Let's take a look shall we?

I was on a train back from Bath the other day (big up to Bath) and I spied the Guerlain Meteorites Bubbles in Look magazine. Those cute peachy colours, that little dome! I was in love!

As my heart started that familiar quickening which comes with new beauty buys I realised that these reminded me a lot of the Maybelline Dream Bouncy blushes which I picked up on hols in New York.

The Maybelline Bouncy Blush looks similar except it was about a third of the price. Get in! I feel so ahead of the curve! (This almost NEVER happens!)

What is a Bouncy blush?!

These little domes of colour can be smudged or stippled onto cheeks for a flush of creamy colour without looking too dewy.

A perfect mix between cream and powder blush, this gel formula really melts into the skin for a natural looking blush.

And they're SQUIDGY! *poke*

There's always that one elusive product that you've been meaning to try for aaages but you somehow never get round to.

Everytime you remember and go to the shop, it's out of stock. Then you see an advert on TV or hear someone talking about it - so you head to your nearest beauty dealer and wait... the shop doesn't sell it.

For me, that annoyingly unobtainable product was this. The Nivea Daily Essentials Express Hydration Primer.

I've been meaning to buy this for 6 months now and I couldn't find it anywhere which is a lot to say for someone who passes four Boots and a Superdrug every day - twice (yes, I am sooo strong, I know)

Before I bought this Hydration Primer, I didn't really use primer every day. It's an extra step to my routine, it makes my skin feel a bit clogged and most of the time, I just couldn't be bothered!

I know you know the feeling..

I finally got it! The Nivea Daily Essentials Express Hydration Primer

I'm sad to say that my spell of clear skin has come to an end. What? This isn't meant to happen? I'm like a REAL adult now! Surely it's meant to get better from here?

Unfortunately as I said farewell to the up and down hormones of puberty, I said HIYA to the 4 horsemen of the skin-hating Apocalypse. Alcohol, Stress, Processed Food and Going OutOut.

The days of wearing just BB cream and a smile are no longer enough. Heavy duty foundation is required!

If the years since puberty have even taught me anything, it's that the right foundation for me is about three things :

  • Colour
  • Formulation
  • Lasting ability

Does it look natural? Is the coverage heavy enough? Does the finish feel comfortable?  Will it have disappeared or changed colour by noon? So much choice and SO MANY FACTORS TO CONSIDER.

Thankfully my innate money-saving sixth sense (aka being well tight with my pennies) has taught me that try before you buy is king.

You gotta kiss a lot of frogs before you find the handsome prince! So on that theme  - here's a round up of the foundations I've been testing before committing to that big spend.... READ ON DEAR READER!

Now I'm not one to judge but...

...if you haven't yet discovered E.L.F (eyeslipsface.co.uk), it's like you've been LIVING IN A CAVE and not yet seen the light!

E.L.F sells lots of great quality cosmetics, at really affordable prices. They do a good range of brushes and, right now, I am giving some serious overtime to their skin-enhancing, complexion boosting products. (see ya later hangover face!)

But today, it's Lipstick day. This lipstick was only £3.75 AND i got it with a 50% discount code - what an absolute bargain. Positively criminal!

And here's the culprit itself.
